Piel de Sapo, or Christmas Melon was first and popularly grown in Spain, which makes it somewhat ideal for most Australian conditions.
It is remarkably well suited to the Australian climate and once established in your garden it will tolerate the sometimes cruel heat of our summers.
The seed germinates quickly and viability is very high.
Allow enough room for it to spread as it will!
We plant in late Autumn and Winter to allow a continual supply of fruit through the summer season.
The fruit is similar to Rock Melon but lighter in taste.
The picked melons have a great shelf life and will comfortably sit for many weeks in the pantry until you are ready.
Once the fruit begins to take shape, we place some sugar cane mulch beneath it to create some air circulation around the fruit.
