Naranjilla or Lulo is another solanacea that combines beauty and the beast effortlessly.
The plant is like something out of a Tim Burton film, beautiful, furry large leaves, that combine the green and purple hues to perfection.
The stems and leaves both posess small thorns that are not as bad as they look and the fruit is covered with a complete fuzz of stiff hairs, that thankfully brush off if picked with gardening gloves.
Once the fruit is solid orange colour, they are ready to eat and can be scooped out with a spoon and eaten directly, or, if you really want to experience a delightful drink, squeeze the pulp into a blender and just add tonic water. Unbelievably delicious.
Another method of gourmet consumption is to add it to vanilla ice cream.
Our seeds strike reasonably easily and initial growth is quick, moving to fruiting stage in a couple of months.
They do not mind sun or shade but do require frequent drinks every day, especially if grown in the sun.
A protected area is best, as strong wind and frost will knock them about.
